The AGA's 1 MINUTE of REAL LIFE Video Contest
Get inspired by the Art Gallery of Alberta's big summer exhibition, REAL LIFE, and create a one-minute video response for your chance at 15 minutes of fame! Visit the AGA Website to find out more.
DESCRIPTION:
In the exhibition REAL LIFE: Ron Mueck and Guy Ben-Ner, the artists consider basic elements of the human condition: birth, death, love, loneliness, family and shelter. Their works weave together the spectacular and the mundane aspects of our real lives, blurring the boundaries between art and the everyday.
REAL LIFE
Life is what distinguishes a self-sustaining biological entity from an inanimate object. Ok, not very glamorous, but hey – as they say: that’s life. While most of our lives may actually be lacking in luster, that doesn’t mean your video has to be. Ron Mueck and Guy Ben-Ner both blur the boundaries between fantastic and ordinary in REAL LIFE – they may be onto something.
REAL BABY
Ron Mueck has a giant baby in the gallery to ponder. A Girl (2006) is over 5 metres long! Babies are great – they smile, they sleep, they eat, they kick, they roll over, and they make funny noises – is there anything we missed?
REAL FAMILY
“Nobody has ever before asked the nuclear family to live all by itself in a box the way we do” (Margaret Mead, cultural anthropologist).
Think of the contemporary family as an experiment – what’s the outcome? Guy Ben-Ner uses his family as source material for his award-winning work – why not give it a try.

1-MINUTE of REAL LIFE Video Awards Ceremony
- Sep 3 (2009) @ 7pm
An Awards Ceremony will be held on September 3 at the AGA to screen the best videos and present winners with fabulous prizes.
Citadel renovations are ongoing, so Metro Cinema continues to screen in the Rice Theatre, just down the hall from our normal room. Until we return to the Zeidler, screenings will continue to be from video, and not from 35mm.
Also, all Silver Screen passes are good for 3 months past their normal date of expiry, to thank you for your patience.
