The Midas Touch
Eldorcdó
Hungary 1988, 100 min, 35mm, Dir: Geza Beremenyi
Hungarian with English subtitles

The Midas Touch is an ambitious period film, which spans the period from the end of World War II to the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, and is largely set in Budapest's Teleki Square fleamarket. Sandor Monori is a black-market trader who uses his wiles to establish himself as the King of the Fleamarket. His philosophy serves him well and he manages to manipulate the lives of those around him with money. Inevitably, though, money cannot buy everything, as Sandor learns when the Russians invade. Beremenyi won Best Director at the 1989 European Film Awards for this potent morality tale, which fuses personal memory and geopolitical history into a powerful, engaging drama.

Hungary: 50 Years After 1956

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, a watershed year in that Central European nation's modern history, the Canadian Film Institute in Ottawa assembled this package of four films which deal, in various cinematic styles, with the tumultuous events of October 1956. This series is presented in collaboration with Embassy of the Republic of Hungary (Ottawa) and Magyar Filmunio (Budapest). Special thanks to the National Arts Centre (Ottawa).
