Dharma River: Journey of a Thousand Buddhas
Yatra Trilogy, Part 1
USA 2003, 81 min, DigiBeta, Dir: John Bush

Dharma River is a lyrical documentary that surveys South East Asia's great spiritual and cultural treasures within an exquisite sensory journey. Visiting the legendary lost civilizations and living wisdom traditions of Laos, Thailand, and Burma, Dharma River powerfully conveys their continuing relevance for contemporary audiences. Ancient temples, mystical landscapes, and wondrous shrines - many of them UNESCO world heritage sites - provide a rich visual tapestry. Combined with a score of rare classical South East Asian music, this visual voyage masterfully illuminates the areas' artistic and devotional traditions. From the canals of Bangkok to the mountains of Laos, from the golden pagodas of Burma to the Mekong River, the film gives a unique experience of sacred space. Along the way, Dharma River's beautiful imagery, haunting score, and nuanced narration transport the viewer to the mystic East on a journey into timelessness.

The Yatra Trilogy

The Yatra Trilogy is a cycle of meditative passages offering a direct experience of sacred spaces and the wisdom they convey. A revered and ancient practice in every spiritual tradition, Yatra is the Sanskrit word for sacred journey. John Bush is a photographer and filmmaker who has lived and traveled in Asia for more than 30 years, sharing its sacred sites, culture and images in his work. The first film, Dharma River, weaves along legendary rivers in Laos, Thailand and Burma in discovery of great Buddhist temples and mystical sites. Prajna Earth, the second in the series, transports the viewer on a visually stunning tour of the spiritual sites of Cambodia, Bali and Java. Finally, Vajra Sky provides the viewer with an intimate look at central Tibet, and the opportunity to experience revered temples, monasteries and festivals that survive under Chinese occupation.

"The Yatra Trilogy offers up the mesmerizing beauty and ineffable power of places most of us will never see." (Tricycle)
