All screenings @ Zeidler Hall in the Citadel Theatre, 9828 - 101A Ave
We continue our Guy Maddin series by inviting Prof William Beard to introduce Maddin's Careful, a weird, funny and unforgettable parable of sexual repression set in an Alpine village. "Be careful." "Never hold a baby's face near an open pin." "Never gamble with life." These are the bizarre warnings that the good people of Tolzbad live by. But most importantly, they must never utter loud sounds lest they cause an avalanche. Sheepskins are hung in windows to muffle noise and the vocal chords of all animals have been severed to insure quiet and safety. Shot in bright, vivid color reminiscent of early two-strip Technicolor, Careful is a visually dazzling, dream-like, quasi-Freudian masterpiece that parodies the German mountain films of the 1920s and authentically recreates the surrealistic style of such famous German Expressionist films as Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
Part of our Guy Maddin Retrospective.
- May 10 (2007) @ 7pm
This screening is part of the larger thematic series:
Citadel renovations are ongoing, so Metro Cinema continues to screen in the Rice Theatre, just down the hall from our normal room. Until we return to the Zeidler, screenings will continue to be from video, and not from 35mm.
Also, all Silver Screen passes are good for 3 months past their normal date of expiry, to thank you for your patience.
