A glimpse into the unique, eccentric mind of a pioneering Canadian photographer, Hannah Maynard (1834 - 1918). Maynard immigrated from England in 1862 to Vancouver Island, where she set up her own portrait studio. After the sudden death of her youngest daughter, she produced a troubling series of experimental images that reflected her haunted state - an attempt to contact her beloved daughter's spirit. Considered overly bold and conventional, she experimented with such techniques as collage, multiple exposures and photo-sculpture. She developed a surreal vision, a world obsessed with children and death, but also the spiritual possibilities of duality, mirrors and the infinity contained in them.
This film screens as part of this screening:
Citadel renovations are ongoing, so Metro Cinema continues to screen in the Rice Theatre, just down the hall from our normal room. Until we return to the Zeidler, screenings will continue to be from video, and not from 35mm.
Also, all Silver Screen passes are good for 3 months past their normal date of expiry, to thank you for your patience.
