Vertigo
USA 1957, 128 min, 35mm, Dir: Alfred Hitchcock

Hitchcock and James Stewart collaborated for the fourth and final time on this strange story of loss and obsession that was voted the second greatest film of all time by a recent Sight & Sound International Critics poll. Stewart plays an ex-detective afflicted with trauma-induced Vertigo who is asked by an old friend to keep tabs on his wife (Kim Novak), who fears she is possessed by the ghost of a long-dead relative and may be preparing to take her own life. What follows is a series of events that add up to an emotionally complex depiction of manipulation and regret that is as far from a typical suspense film as you could get, a daring and masterful work of art described by Hitchcock as his most personal film.
