The Devil is a Woman
USA 1935, 82 min, 35mm, Dir: Josef von Sternberg

Adapted from the same Pierre Loüys novel that spawned Luis Buñuel's That Obscure Object of Desire, The Devil Is a Woman is set in a studio version of Spain, intricately conceived with typical Sternbergian flair, and situates coquettish Dietrich in the middle of a love triangle with an older military man and a young revolutionary, both of whom suffer the exquisite agony of being snubbed by her. Devastating Dietrich delivers lines nobody else could have pulled off, telling one of her admirers, “If you really loved me, you would have killed yourself,” in her role as a cigarette factory worker who wins the heart of every man that lays eyes on her. The last collaboration of Dietrich and von Sternberg, and their favourite film of the seven they made together. (George Kaltsounakis, Cinematheque Ontario)
