Composer Winslow Leach (William Finley) is duped into selling his masterpiece cantata to the evil record producer Swan (Paul Williams), a Faustian mistake which leaves Leach horribly maimed by a record press and his voicebox replaced by a computer. Reborn as the Phantom, Leach plots a campaign of revenge against Swan, haunting the diminutive mogul’s music palace, the Paradise, and mooning over Swan’s latest acquisition, aspiring singer Phoenix. This glam rock amalgam of The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Grey was a box office disappointment for writer/director De Palma, but, like the Phantom himself, it has since risen into prominence in cult canon.
