An adventure drama of truly epic proportions, Lawrence of Arabia depicts the experiences of British war hero, T.E. Lawrence, during World War I, his exploits in Aqaba and Damascus and work in the Arab National council in particular. Yet, these encounters with impersonal militarypolitical forces become brutally poignant personal dramas as Lawrence simultaneously contends with the cruel Arabian desert and struggles with his own crises of identity and national allegiance. The film is a cinematographic milestone; its ultra-widescreen compositions, shot on Super Panavision 70 film, capture the sublime grandeur of the natural elements as they engulf the fragile humanity toiling in their midst. More than holding his own beside the likes of Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, Claude Rains, and a host of other acting legends, Lawrence of Arabia was a career-defining role for it’s star, Peter O’Toole (1932 - 2013). Metro Cinema invites you to celebrate the life and work of this venerable British actor in one of the most influential films in cinematic history. The version being presented will be an HD Digital format of the 1989 Director’s Cut restoration. This version runs 242 minutes (including the overture, 15 mminute intermission and exit music) as compared to the original release’s 222 minute running time, with most of the cut scenes being dialogue sequences.

Professor Bill Beard from the University of Alberta Film Studies Department will introduce the film on opening night, January 18 @ 7pm.
