For the past two and a half years the Egyptian Revolution has been a non-stop roller coaster of actions, emotions and images. Through the news we catch glimpses of the most dramatic events - a bloody battle, a million man march, a volatile election: at the beginning of July 2013 the world watched as the second president was deposed within the space of three years . The Square, however, is an immersive experience, transporting the viewer deep into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling against multiple forces, in the fight to create a society of conscience. Winner of Best Documentary at the 2013 Toronto International & Sundance Film Festivals. Oscar nominated.

The Edmonton chapter of Amnesty International will host the screening on Sat, February 1 @ 9:35PM. After the film Dr. Magdy El-Shamma, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and African Studies & History and Classics at the U of A who specializes in the history of the Middle East and Dr. Mojitaba Mahdavi, Assistant Professor, Middle Eastern & African Studies Program and Department of Political Science who specializes in Middle Eastern politics will provide the audience with an update on the developments in Egypt since the film's events, as well as answer questions. There will be an information table in the lobby with letters to sign for actions that Amnesty International is currently working on in Egypt.

FILM REVIEW "this extraordinary portrait of Egypt in tumultuous transition is by turns hopeful and despairing. Above all it reminds us that such change is still possible in the 21st century." Josef Braun -VUE Weekly
