Inspired by the crime novels of Dashiell Hammett and other masters of Hardboiled fiction, Rian Johnson’s debut film Brick sets noir-drenched mystery in a modern-day California high school. With the discovery of his ex-girlfriend’s body in a storm drain, outsider Brendan (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) turns into a dogged 1930s gumshoe. While dodging threats from fellow students and faculty members, he must navigate a Chandleresque high school underground of dubious dames and petty thugs in an effort to find the truth.
