The Smiths are a delightful middle-class family proudly living in 1903 St. Louis and looking forward to the following year’s world’s Fair, but not to a proposed move to New York in MGM’s lavish Technicolor adaptation of Sally Benson’s New Yorker stories. As the seasons change and the family reluctantly prepares to move, the four Smith girls learn lessons in life and love. Judy Garland is enchanting as one of the sisters, and her performance of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, is one of her most iconic. Capturing the spirit of hope and anxiety that informed the last years of WWII, “it is truly a film for all seasons and all time.” (Philip French, The Guardian)
