Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack one of his iconic roles) is a gallant 19-year-old Seattle kickboxing fanatic whose untried confidence is shaken when his whirlwind romance with Diane Court (ione Skye), the idealized scholar-princess of his class, ends as abruptly as it began. Lloyd’s quest to win the heart of the fair damsel is fraught with obstacles, including Diane’s overbearing, father and her life ambitions, as well as Lloyd’s own insecurities. Despite his charming demeanour and seeming self-possession, an undercurrent of desperation flows through his endearing eccentricities. Selfdoubt and the uncertainty of youth infuses all the main characters populating Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut, bringing a unique dimensionality to the ubiquitous teen romance genre of the 80s. Full of angst, adolescent shenanigans, and young love – and cued to Peter Gabriel’s infectious anthem – it’s just like high school all over again.
