Xavier Dolan’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning fifth film depicts a trio of lost souls who refuse to give in, even though all three harbour a darkness in their hearts. When Diane “Die” Després (Anne Dorval) picks up her troubled 15-year-old son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) from a youth protection facility, it’s immediately clear that this guy is a disaster waiting to happen. Die is also a piece of work with an attitude as rough around the edges as her vocabulary. Kyla (Suzanne Clément), the introverted stuttering neighbour, is inexorably drawn to this odd, tightly knit two-person family. Dolan’s trademark stylistic flourishes support the emotional narrative in an ode to the strength of tough working-class single mothers everywhere. (Brendan Kelly, Montreal Gazette)
