L.B. Jeffries (Jeff) is a man of action who has been laid up in his apartment with a broken leg. His only two regular visitors are Stella, who predicts trouble, and his fiancée, Lisa Fremont, an elegant model and dress designer, who despairs of ever getting him to commit himself. Jeff's apartment window shares a courtyard with many other windows (all built on a single set by Hitchcock). As Jeff convalesces, he becomes familiar with some of the other tenants, including Thorvald, a man whose bed-bound wife makes his life miserable. When the wife vanishes Jeff begins to suspect there has been a murder. Sitting in his wheelchair, holding a camera with a telephoto lens, he looks and scans the scene like a movie camera would. What he sees, we see. What conclusions he draws, we draw – all without words, because the pictures add up to a montage of suspicion. (Roger Ebert)
