Albert and David Maysles were proponents of the Direct Cinema movement of the 50’s and 60s, in which “reactive” filmmakers record events as they unfold naturally and spontaneously. Gimme Shelter, the Maysles’ landmark music documentary, defines spontaneity, revealing the conflicts and contradictions within the counterculture era through the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. Only four months earlier, Woodstock defined the Love Generation; now it lay in ruins on a desolate racetrack six miles outside of San Francisco.
