During the fall of 1973 the Maysles spent some six weeks in East Hampton with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ aunt and cousin, Big Edie and Little Edie Beale, an elderly mother and her unmarried daughter living by the sea in a crumbling house filled with the cluttered memories of the their privileged past. This unscripted slice of life is simultaneously heartwarming, tragic, and bizarre. Initially met with accusations of voyeurism, Grey Gardens has since been ranked among the International Documentary Association’s (IDA) top documentaries of all time.
