Cardinal Richelieu and his power-hungry entourage seek to take control of seventeenth-century France, but first need to remove Father Grandier, the priest who runs the fortified town that prevents them from exerting total control. So they seek to destroy him by setting him up as a warlock in control of a devil-possessed nunnery, the mother superior of which is sexually obsessed by him. A mad witch-hunter is brought in to gather evidence against the priest, ready for the big trial.

When Ken Russell’s controversial The Devils was first released in 1971, the film faced harsh reaction due to its disturbingly violent, sexual, and religious content. Only after Russell was forced to make several, now infamous, cuts was the film allowed to screen publically. Banned in several countries, the film has never received a release in its original, uncut form in Canada. Metro presents on pour big screen the original UK “X” Certificate cut of this film, which is 2 minutes longer than current versions available in North America.
