"Using only five roles, four actors, and the City of Montreal, So Faraway and Blue builds a web of delicate, fragile relationships, each of which might or might not stand up to the first breath of wind.
Not that there is much wind on the hot, sticky August days during which the film is set. The characters, each living their own solipsistic existence, are portrayed in grainy black and white wandering across the steaming, oily tarmac and crisp, dry verges of the suburbs as cicadas drown out any possibility of logical thought.
Julie, our narrator and guide, is a young woman whose father left her when she was young and whose mother recently threw her out of the house because she reminded her too much of him. Now living in the bottom of an empty swimming pool, she follows strangers around on her bicycle.
On this particular day, the stranger she meets is Hank, a man about her father's age, who has traveled from Alberta to get closure from Véronique, the woman he deserted on a Mexican beach. As they join forces to search for her, Julie's attempts to connect with Hank fail as he is lost in his own world and she does not seem have the subtlety to draw him out of it. This burgeoning relationship is interwoven with Véronique, who has returned to Montreal to make a fresh start, and Gus, a friend who has fallen in unrequited love with her, too fast and too deep." Citadel renovations are ongoing, so Metro Cinema continues to screen in the Rice Theatre, just down the hall from our normal room. Until we return to the Zeidler, screenings will continue to be from video, and not from 35mm.
Also, all Silver Screen passes are good for 3 months past their normal date of expiry, to thank you for your patience.
