Canada 2023, 83 min, Dir: Brittany Farhat
Presented by NorthwestFest
Grappling with a global pandemic and a live music shutdown, hard touring band July Talk plans for its only live shows of 2020: 2 nights at the Stardust Drive-In Theatre north of Toronto.
While planning for these 2 August shows, the band confronts deep uncertainties: a public health emergency, financial risk and the sudden onset of a chronic illness in one of its members. A staple of the Toronto live music scene, emerging filmmaker Brittany Farhat decides to document the months of panic and epiphany as the drive-in shows take shape. Combining the real-time concert with unreleased archival footage of the band’s highs and lows over a decade, Farhat follows a thoughtful group of artists to a crossroads of identity and circumstance. They are travelling far from the familiar: staring out at a field of cars in the middle of nowhere, finding their strength under a summer meteor shower.
Shot in glorious black & white, JULY TALK: LOVE LIVES HERE is a fascinating look behind the curtain at the creative process of one of Canada’s most distinctive bands.
