Director Spotlight: Ousmane Sembène

Ousmane Sembène was a Senegalese film director, producer and writer. The Los Angeles Times considered him one of the greatest authors of Africa and he has often been called the “father of African film”— he held a dream of creating a cinema by, about, and for the inhabitants of his home continent. He was one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers who ever lived, as well as the most renowned African director of the twentieth century—and yet his name still deserves to be better known in the rest of the world
